The secret to creating the best office spaces

29th July, 2024

How we create office spaces that are made to evolve with your business.

Design Director and Partner, Luisa Russo, has been with Maris for nine years and counting, joining us when she moved to the UK from Italy and embracing what she found to be a dynamic working environment amongst our team.

She says: “The last nine years at Maris have been a real journey for me. I relocated from Italy and started as a Design Intern. What I thought was going to be a short parenthesis in my career ended up being the best choice I ever made. I started as an intern. After a few months I was given the chance to join the company as an Architectural Technician, then I was promoted to Designer. Project after project I proved myself and I was given the opportunities to eventually become a Design Director. It speaks to Maris’ meritocratic culture – it’s a place where being committed, working hard and striving for excellence is rewarded”.

Listening carefully to client needs and then marrying those with space plans, budgets and timelines, Luisa’s focus is on every detail. From finding the right light fitting to searching for the best coffee machine, she works alongside everyone, from our 3D artists to our Technical Directors.

Here, she explains, how the continuously changing work environment means that the best spaces are built to evolve.

Pandemic shift

During the pandemic we found that clients fell squarely into one of two mindsets. There were those who were anxious about people not coming back to the office, and those who were sure that people needed to come back to the office. The latter were determined to make the workspace more attractive and proactively sought out the necessary expertise to make that happen, especially in London.

Now that everything has calmed down a bit, a lot of companies have rediscovered how important an office is. As a result, our job as designers is more exciting because expectations are higher. Offices are not just about desks and receptions – people want flexible working, cafes, gyms – they want to make the office amazing so that people want to come into work. The briefs we receive from clients are more exciting than ever – employers want people to have all the things they don’t have at home because that’s where productivity takes shape.

Eternal evolution

Pandemic aside, the workplace and its requirements are always changing. You can’t forecast where things will go. The only thing you can predict is that it will change. Who would have expected a pandemic followed by a war which impacts how we procure things? The way of working can also change any time, so that flexibility and ability to evolve must be considered to help future-proof working environments.

Do you want help creating a working environment that’s designed for the future?

Sustainable solutions

Sustainability is the other area that must be considered at every level of design and office evolution. At Maris we incorporate a sustainability baseline as standard. For example, having already done our due diligence, when we go to choose finishes from suppliers, everything we propose to the clients has been preselected to be environmentally conscious.

Unlike most people think, sustainability starts way before selecting finishes. When we design for longevity, when we include wellness elements like biophilic details, making the most out natural light or a flow that promotes movement we are contributing to the environment.
