The Challenge
The University of Sunderland in London had outgrown its Docklands base and needed a much larger campus for its expanding student community. They secured a long term lease at Harbour Exchange and aimed to create a flexible, inclusive setting across two linked buildings. The project carried tight timelines, existing building constraints and the need to keep one floor in use throughout.
The Solution
Maris were appointed to design and fit out both buildings and create a single unified campus. The brief focused on inclusion, wellbeing and performance. We delivered high quality teaching spaces, accessible social areas and strong technical support. Key features include an accessible reception, a flexible auditorium, a visible medical simulation suite, compliance upgrades and tailored furniture designed around the needs of the student body.
The Result
The university now has a modern, welcoming campus designed for comfort and achievement. To experience this transformation, you can watch the University’s latest video here, which captures the complemented campus in action and highlights its dedicated spaces for learning, wellbeing, and community.

Furniture Designed Around Students
Our furniture team worked with the university to develop ergonomic seating that responds to student feedback. The bespoke chair was so well received that members of the team requested it for personal use, and other institutions are now reviewing it for their own campuses.
Delivering Through Complex Conditions
Older buildings and changes of use created technical challenges. We worked closely with the university, and the wider team to manage compliance upgrades, structural work and specialist installations while keeping the programme on track. The design reflects the university values of inclusion, accessibility and ambition.
