The Challenge
As part of a wider plan to optimise the campus and improve the student experience, the University of Exeter chose to refurbish Innovation Centre 1 and 2, including the cafe and the restaurant. The work needed to be completed quickly, at a controlled cost and with minimal disruption to day to day activity.
The Solution
We worked with the estates team and the steering group to shape a turnkey refurbishment that met their occupancy needs and programme. The design refreshed the buildings, improved flow and created new places for study, dining and collaboration.
The Result
The Innovation Centre is now a preferred destination for students. The refurbishment created a bright cafe and restaurant, quiet study zones, collaborative areas and new classrooms. The environment supports a mix of study and social activity throughout the day.
The University of Exeter is a leading research and teaching institution known for academic strength, student satisfaction and a strong campus setting. The Innovation Centre forms part of the Streatham Campus and supports enterprise, collaboration and student life. The refurbishment strengthens its role at the heart of campus activity.
A Shift from Incubator Space to Student Hub
The buildings were previously used mainly for business incubator activity. The refurbishment has transformed the space into a popular destination for students seeking places to study, meet and relax.
Acoustic Comfort as a Priority
Achieving strong acoustic performance was essential for classrooms and study spaces. The design and technical detailing focused on comfort, clarity and the ability to concentrate in busy periods.
