The Challenge
To progress their new library project, London South Bank University needed to relocate several academic schools, including the well-known Elephant Studios. Suitable space was found at 103 Borough Road, but the building contained significant asbestos and required a complete refurbishment before it could support specialist studio activity.
The Solution
We worked with the estates team and the Elephant Studios group to shape a full solution for their new home. The design created a complete suite of facilities including a news studio, a radio studio and control room, editing rooms, green rooms, grading suites, a sound studio, a Mac lab, a photography studio, a print lab, a fashion store and a kit store. Each space was planned to support modern media teaching and professional workflows.
The Result
Elephant Studios now operates as a modern, state of the art facility at the forefront of digital media and creative learning. Students, academics and staff have responded with real enthusiasm to the new environment.
London South Bank University is a well-regarded university known for practical learning, strong connections to industry and a focus on preparing students for work. Elephant Studios supports media, film, journalism and creative subjects and provides students with the tools and spaces to develop real world skills.
Acoustic Performance at the Highest Level
Elephant Studios sits on a busy London road. We worked with specialist acoustic consultants to ensure each studio achieved the required performance for recording, broadcasting and editing. The work created quiet, controlled and professional spaces throughout the building.
A Temporary Home That Became Permanent
The university originally planned for this building to be a temporary location for Elephant Studios. The quality of the facilities and the strong reaction from staff and students led to it becoming a permanent home.
