The Challenge
Hurstpierpoint College has expanded to more than one thousand three hundred students and almost five hundred staff. Their kitchen could no longer support the scale of daily service. The building sits within a Victorian structure that connects directly to the dining hall, which created limits on how the space could be modernised. To keep food service running, the entire kitchen operation had to be moved to a temporary marquee with no interruption.
The Solution
Working with the estates and catering teams, we delivered a full turnkey refurbishment that modernised every part of the kitchen. The work included a substation upgrade, improved drainage, a new layout and new equipment. The design focused on efficiency, comfort and the smooth movement of staff during busy service times.
The Result
The Victorian building is now a modern kitchen that supports high volume catering with ease. The team can prepare and serve up to two thousand meals, snacks and drinks three times a day. The refurbished space gives the college a facility that matches its scale and ambition.
Hurstpierpoint College is an independent school in West Sussex founded in 1849. The college provides education for pupils from nursery through sixth form and is known for its strong pastoral care and broad academic and co-curricular programmes. Food and wellbeing are central to student life, and the kitchen plays a vital role in the daily rhythm of the school.
A Building with Deep Heritage
The kitchen has occupied the same Victorian building since the college opened in 1849. The refurbishment respected this history while creating a practical and modern environment for a large and active community.
A Seamless Service Maintained
The kitchen could not close at any point during the programme. A temporary marquee was created and carefully planned to support full food service. This ensured the catering team could operate without disruption while the major refurbishment took place.
