The Challenge

Fordham University began their London presence in a small space within a church in Kensington. Strong student demand created the need for a larger, more central location. They identified Two Eyre Street Hill, a derelict building requiring a complete external and internal refurbishment.

The Solution

After a competitive tender, Maris were appointed to deliver a fast-track turnkey project that met Fordham’s budget, programme and specific academic needs. We created a full mix of learning and social spaces including a student lounge, library, quiet study areas, flexible classrooms and a roof deck. Each area was shaped to support community, comfort and focused study.

The Result

Fordham University now have a confident London campus that brings students together in a warm and engaging environment. The quality of the space is such that other universities regularly request to use the facilities.

Fordham University is a well-regarded institution founded in New York in 1841. The university is known for academic excellence, strong global programmes and a commitment to intellectual and personal growth. Their London campus needed to reflect their values and provide a welcoming base for students studying abroad.

A Building with a Rich Industrial Past

Two Eyre Street Hill began as two Victorian buildings later combined to house the offices and manufacturing plant of Winstone Printing Inks, a supplier to the newspapers on Fleet Street. A north wing was added in the nineteen twenties or thirties. The last occupier was Ben Sherman who used the building as their London office and atelier. The project restored this layered history and gave the structure a new life as a modern academic setting.

Complex Conditions Managed with Care

The building contained significant asbestos which we identified and managed as part of the project. Careful planning, strict procedures and clear communication ensured the safe and smooth progress of the work.
