A dramatic shift in office space for creative collective The MISSION Group
Designing a new space for a group of agencies and then delivering in record time due to an unexpected change of events.

The brief

Create a space that brought the different agencies together in a culture of cohabitation, while enabling them to retain their individuality.

The solution

Embracing a neutral open plan theme to bring teams together while allowing individual details to add the colour and character throughout.

The result

A space that brings teams together whilst also letting their individual identity shine, delivered at speed to align with their end of the lease.

Led by entrepreneurs and dedicated to the pursuit of independent creativity, The MISSION Group is a collective of creative agencies that stormed to success during the pandemic and have continued their meteoric rise ever since.

They were looking to relocate from offices in Clerkenwell where their lease was coming to an end, and they had outgrown the space. They wanted to move to a destination that would be able to accommodate the individual brand identities of each member agency within a cohesive environment.

A dramatic change of events

In the initial instance, the business had found a Grade II listed, former Masons building in Covent Garden to move to. The property had fallen into a state of disrepair, and we went through several design iterations to make the impressive space work for the forward-thinking company.

However, due to intrinsic challenges with the building, they were forced to reconsider the location at the last minute, quickly finding a new space at The Manufactory on Tottenham Court Road.

The former Heal’s building had recently been refurbished and The MISSION Group were able to secure the fourth floor and part of the fifth floor for their new workplace. The new space was completely different to the one that we had originally designed for, so we set about translating the concepts created for a listed building into ones that would work in a more contemporary setting, all at breakneck speed as the company’s lease in Clerkenwell was rapidly coming to an end.

The work that we do at Maris is very intense because we work quickly, and we’re really invested in every project. The MISSION Group was a really interesting opportunity to bring people together in a post-pandemic world and create an environment that delivered the benefits of working from home as well as being in the office.

The goal was to create somewhere that people wanted to be, in an environment that serves the business today and as it continues to evolve. Working collaboratively with the team to understand what they wanted and needed, we achieved just that, all against a challenging deadline.”

A unique aesthetic

Retaining the look and feel of the previously approved concepts, we updated it to fit the new space. As a result, each of the incorporated agencies had their own defined area within an open plan environment, while the design language encouraged a sense of unity and connectivity among the agencies.

We implemented a sensory approach where neutral walls and light wood flooring are brought together with colourful soft finishings throughout each zone.

Furniture is distinctly modern, formed of soft shapes and curves, while natural light pours in through large windows and a vast skylight, encouraged to flow through the space thanks to glass walls around meeting rooms and other enclosed spaces.

Characterful details include beautiful wooden desks to add individuality, giving the office a distinct vibe that reflects both the multiplicity of businesses as well as their likeminded creative outlook.

A solutions-focused support system

Our work with The MISSION Group was a real partnership, meeting not only their design needs but providing support, consultation and problem-solving along the way. The result is a spectacular, sensory space, delivered at breakneck speed to time in with the end of the lease on their previous office. We also had a lot of creative fun along the way.

“From the outset, Maris demonstrated their desire to really understand our brief, working with us to create our new collective flexible working space whilst being sympathetic to the Grade II listed building.

The Maris team supported in a variety of ways, from space planning to design updates and landlord contribution negotiations, through to taking us shopping for our office furniture and relaxed seating areas and helping us choose paint, carpet and door handle finishes. The Devil is in the details after all!

The scale of the brief was immense, but we stuck to budget, stuck to our planning and build schedule and had a lot of fun in the process. The budget was maintained throughout, communication was faultless, and we are delighted with the quality of the finishes and our furniture choices.

All our people are over the moon with our new space. It’s light, open and a beautiful, relaxed and enticing collaborative working space for all to enjoy.

I have no hesitation in working with Maris again or recommending them. We started as strangers. We ended as friends.”
