Helping a global credit agency future proof their office strategy

AM Best is a global credit agency, news publisher and data analytics provider specialising in the insurance industry. Located in a contemporary property on Arthur Street in the City of London, they were introduced to Maris to help them refine their strategy when relocating to a higher floor within the building.

The move was precipitated by changing office practices. Like many companies, they have shifted to a hybrid working approach, with fewer people in the office full time, resulting in a need for less space but more flexibility for improved and varied functionality.

Choosing a path

In the initial instance we worked with them to define their strategy for the space for the future of their business. This included an in-depth workplace analysis featuring interviews with 11 managers and visioning sessions. As a result, we came up with a space budget and translated that into a plan that worked for them. This plan was then tendered to three design and build firms, including Maris, and we were ultimately successful in winning the bid.

Optimised professionalism

The design for the AM Best offices was a very carefully considered balance between preferred modern working experiences for the staff and the preservation of essential practices including privacy and compliance due to the nature of their work. The structure of the space has an impact on all these elements. We also wanted the space to be as dynamic and multipurpose as possible, so it remains optimised at all times.

Functionality and flexibility

Alongside open plan parts of the office, compliance requirements necessitated several private offices and phone booths, all of which are double glazed and acoustically treated. However, to enable flexible use, we installed a folding wall in the front of house meeting rooms, which can also be used as an event space or adapted for different numbers of people.

Bespoke business

Although the style of the space is very much in keeping with the corporate nature of the brand, it’s softened with neutral tones and ribbed cladding features, while team spaces offer unique points of visual interest. A focal point is a bespoke piece of joinery in the reception area, which allows people to wait comfortably, but also to perch and work if they want to. Meanwhile, in the teapoint, we exposed the ceiling to give it a more relaxed vibe commensurate with time away from the computer screen.

High Functioning Style

The project trod a fine line between supporting updated employee needs at AM Best, whilst also preserving the professional needs of the team, the company and their clients. The result is a highly functional, elegant space that retains and reflects the brand’s integrity.

Jasjot Singh Kohli, Senior Managing Director at AM Best, said: “We are very pleased with our new offices. The engagement and quality of work by Maris has been to the highest of standards. The team at Maris provided much needed upfront investment which has paid dividends with the overall design and build outcome. Senior leadership and staff all agree that we have a modern office space that attracts attendance and that staff are proud to work in.”
