Fitting out a high-performance office fit for a global enterprise
Schonfeld Strategic Advisors

Heritage meets professional

Schonfeld Strategic Advisors is an American financial services firm based in New York City, and having been in business since 1988, they have built a pioneering reputation for systematic and quantitative trading. The $20bn US hedge fund established their London office in 2019, and when it came to fitting out a new space for their ongoing growth and development in the UK, they enlisted the support of the team at Maris.

The best of past, present and future

Schonfeld Strategic Advisors new offices are set in the prestigious 78 St James’s Street, a unique proposition because of its spectacular combination of location, heritage and modern updates.

Part of an established business district overlooking the majestic Green Park and St James’s Park, it also has the culture and convenience of Piccadilly’s shops, restaurants and general buzz on its doorstep. Alongside that, the building’s history dates to the 1840s, and as such, architectural details include impressive features like a domed lobby with mosaic tiling and murals.

The office itself is a 23,000 square ft space, set within the Grade II listed building, but with key contemporary updates to the structure. The challenge for Maris was to provide a Cat B fit out that fused heritage with the brand values of Schonfeld Strategic Advisors, whilst also creating a high-performance working environment to support the wellbeing and productivity of the team.

A new era and a new purpose

A curious part of the building’s history was its role as the former Conservative Club. As a result, one of the pivotal areas of the office fit out was the former Billiard Room, said to have been a favourite haunt of Winston Churchill. In its new guise, it functions both as Schonfeld Strategic Advisors’ Boardroom and as an impressive event space. Additional works included new small power installations, partition walls, floors and finishes in keeping with the brand’s aesthetic.

Project Technical Director, Richard Green, said: “This was a really interesting project to work on because it involved bringing a modern working mentality embracing the best of office practices into a building with abundant heritage that also needed to be celebrated. The Cat B works enabled Schonfeld Strategic Advisors to move straight in after a rapid turnaround in the completion of the works, providing a productive and inspiring environment in which a hard-working and driven team could come together to take the business to the next level.”
