A workspace to redefine an established company as a modern employer

JTI is a member of the Gallaher Limited group of companies, a leading international tobacco and e-cigarette manufacturer. Having been based in Weybridge for many years, changes in the way they work, including more hybrid working and an evolving staff mentality, inspired them to a seismic shift. This involved moving their UK headquarters to a more central location in London’s Putney. When it came to fitting it out, they enlisted the help of the team at Maris.

Fast track to the future

The 24,000 sq. ft space included four floors and a roof terrace, requiring a Cat B design and fit out that would enable the team to move in and start work straight away. The company’s move from Weybridge was a sea change in the way they work, away from occupying an entire estate with a near 1:1 desk to staff ratio, to a space that enabled hot desking, collaborative meetings and that also had Teams booths for video calls.

A workspace to inspire and support your team

With many team members living near the former office location, part of the challenge was to create a working environment that would inspire and encourage them to come into the workplace. We wanted to create a space that offered more benefits than working from home, allowing individuals to get the most out of their day, whilst also creating healthy separation between home and work life.

Part of that meant creating elements that made it easy for people to come into work. For example, we included lockers instead of pedestals so staff can keep personal belongings safely. A key aspect of the office was a huge breakout space and a large bar area on the ground floor, designed to generate a town hall atmosphere and a sense of conviviality.

Other, practical works included HVAC modifications, small power, structured cabling and specialist joinery, floor and wall finishes to reflect the brand’s values, character and progression as a forward-thinking tech business.

Project Technical Director, Richard Green, said: “The fit out for JTI embodied a bold choice for the company in how they work and interact with their team, reflective of decisions that many businesses are considering post-pandemic with more options for hybrid working. Their proactive choice to use their office space differently and as a way of inspiring the team as well as taking the business into its next phase, is a powerful one. The design and fit out has been done to reflect that forward-thinking character of the brand.”
