A university winter garden in High Wycombe
Maris have created a space that inspires students at Buckinghamshire New University.

Maris have created a space that inspires students at Buckinghamshire New University.

With six weeks to go on Buckinghamshire New University’s new education space, the jewel in its crown is now installed and watertight.

The Winter Garden is a former service space that was largely unused and unappealing. With the goal of creating spaces that students want to spend time in, we have transformed it into a year-round recreation space. Five tonne glass sheets have been put together to create a focal point for social interaction.

The space sits adjacent to a vast atrium and together they are designed to create opportunities for communication, collaboration and inspiration. The Winter Garden will be completed with carefully planned landscaping to enhance that sense of bringing the outside in through greenery and other plant life.

Buckinghamshire New University is acutely aware of the importance of listening to student wants and needs, not only providing great standards of education, but creating great experiences as well. Students aspire to spend time in spaces that look and feel fantastic – perhaps even those that look great on their Instagram feed. As a result, instead of leaving campus for lunch or social occasions, they are more inclined to stay on site and maximise the university experience.

At Maris our goal is to create useable spaces, and that’s what we’ve done here – turned an otherwise wasted area into a jewel in the university’s crown.
